Case Study - Essay Example The academic advisors also aim to ensure that all the students get an advising experience that is well rounded to navigate challenges and opportunities to fulfill career related and educational goals. They also work with students to transform their unique skills and, thus, create transformational change for their families and themselves (Kelly, 2003). Finally, the goals set by the academic advisers are to help their students to successfully navigate college, whatever their background, and to provide them with the tools they need to thrive in the university. However, there are several obstacles in attempting to improve leadership. One has to do with giving motivation to those one is leading, especially because the students will not go far if they do not feel motivated to achieve the set goals (Gilbert, 2012). Those who lack focus or interest in their goals will undermine the leaderââ¬â¢s authority and efforts, although this could be fixed by clearly communicating the mission. Leaders also, sometimes, find it difficult to cultivate an experience of leadership. In order to be effective, a leader must ensure that he/she is capable of effective leadership. Skills that are required to execute particular goals cannot be learned in a classroom setting and, as such, they require some experience so as to execute them. For this reason, lack of experience is an obstacle to improvement of leadership capabilities. Lack of open communication is also an obstacle to improvement of leadership. This could involve finding a way for them to be approacha ble sans losing their authority. For a leader to improve he/she has to depend on open communication and this proves to be an obstacle sometimes.
